Preparations for Building the Temple

(I Kings 8 18-20)

But Hashem said to my father David, ‘Inasmuch as it has been in your heart to build a Temple for My Name, you have done well by having this in your heart.  You, however, shall not build the Temple.  Rather, your son, who will emerge from your loins – he will build the Temple for My Name.’  Now Hashem has fulfilled His word that He spoke, for I have risen in place of my father David, and I sit on the throne of Israel as Hashem spoke, and I have built the Temple for the Name of Hashem, God of Israel.

 (I Chronicles 22 7-19)
David said to Solomon, “My son, I had in mind to build a Temple for the Name of Hashem, my God, but the word of Hashem came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have made great wars; you shall not build a Temple for My Name’s sake, for you have shed much blood upon the ground for me.  Behold, a son will be born to you; he will be a man of rest, and I shall grant him rest from all his enemies all around.  His name will be Solomon, and I will bestow peace and tranquility upon Israel in his days.  He will build a Temple for My Name’s sake; he will be a son to Me and I will be a Father to him.  And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’  Now, my son, may Hashem be with you; may you be successful and build the Temple if Hashem your God, as He said about you.  Only may Hashem give you wisdom and understanding, and give you command over Israel, to keep the Torah of Hashem, your God.  Then you will succeed, if you are careful to follow the statutes and ordinances which Hashem commanded Moses concerning Israel.  Be strong and courageous!  Do not fear and do not lose resolve.  Now, behold, despite my inadequacy, I have prepared for the Temple of Hashem a hundred thousand talents of gold, a million talents of silver, and an amount of copper and iron which is not weighed because of its abundance  of workmen – quarry workers, artisans of stone and wood, and people skilled at every manner of work.  The gold, silver, copper and iron is beyond calculation.  Therefore, arise and act, and may Hashem be with you!”  David commanded all the officers of Israel to help his son Solomon:  “Surely, Hashem your God is with you; He will grant you rest all around you, for He has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land has been conquered before Hashem and before his people.  Now apply tour heat and soul to seek Hashem, your G-d; get up and build the Sanctuary of Hashem, God, to bring hr Ark of the Covenant of Hashem and the sacred vessels of God into the Temple that will be built for the sake of Hashem.”

 (I Chronicles 28 2-9)
King David stood up on his feet and said:  “Hear me, my brothers and my people!  I had in my heart to build a house of rest for the Ark of Covenant of Hashem, as a footstool for our God, and I prepared to build.  But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a Temple for My Name, because you are a man of wars and have shed blood.’  Hashem, God of Israel, chose me from all my father’s family to be king over Israel forever.  For He chose Judah to be the ruler, and of the House of Judah [He chose] my father’s house, and of the sons of my father it was me that He saw for to make king over all Israel.  And for all my sons – for many sons has Hashem given me – He has chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of Hashem, over Israel.  He said to me, ‘Your son Solomon – he shall build My Temple and My courtyards; for I have chosen his kingdom forever – if he will be firm in fulfilling My commandments and My laws, as on this day.’  “So now, in the sight of all Israel, the congregation of Hashem, and in the audience of our God: Observe and seek out all the commandments of Hashem your God, so that you may possess the good land and bequeath it to your children after you forever.
