King Solomon's Crowning

King Solomon's Crowning
(I Kings 1 32-46)

Bath-sheba bowed down to the ground and prostrated herself to the king, and she said, “May my lord King David live forever!”  King David then said, “Summon Zadok the Kohen, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada to me”; and they came before the king.  The king said to them, “Take with you your master’s servants and mount my son Solomon upon my mule and take him down to Gihon.  There Zadok the Kohen and Nathan the prophet shall anoint him as king over Israel; sound the shofar and proclaim, ‘[Long] live King Solomon!’  Then come back up after him, and let him come and sit upon my throne, and he shall reign in my place, for it is he whim I have commanded to become prince over Israel and Judah.”  Benaiah son of Jehoiada then answered the king saying, “Amen!  And so may Hashem, God if my lord the king, say!  Just as Hashem was with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon, and may He make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!”  So Zadok the Kohen and Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada and the archers and slingers went down and mounted Solomon upon King David’s mule, and led him to Gihon.  Zadok the Kohen had taken the horn of oil from the Tent, and he anointed Solomon; they sounded the shofar, and all the people proclaimed, “[Long] live King Solomon!”  All the people then ascended after him, and the people were playing flutes and rejoicing with great joy; the ground [virtually] burst from their noise.  Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard this just when they had finished eating.  Joab heard the sound of the shofar and said, “Why is the sound of the city [so] turbulent?”  He was still speaking, when Jonathan son of Abiathar the Kohen came.  Adonijah said, “Come, for you are a man of accomplishment and you will bring good tidings!”  Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, “To the contrary, our lord King David has made Solomon king!  The king sent with him Zadok the Kohen, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the archers and slingers, and they mounted him upon the king’s mule.  Zadok the Kohen and Nathan the prophet anointed him as king at Gihon.  They ascended from there rejoicing, and the city became turbulent; that is the noise that you heard.  Furthermore, Solomon has sat upon the royal throne,
