When the Past Meets the Future: A Segway Tour Back to Ancient Jerusalem

The Segway tour begins in the Peace Forest, located in southeastern Jerusalem between the Armon HaNatziv Promenade and Abu Tor. The tour is conducted on the Segway vehicle, which can reach a maximum speed of 20 km per hour. Feeling light and breezy, we will set out on a two hour tour which would have taken us an entire day of walking on foot!
The first stop on our tour is the Haas Promenade, an enchanting spot with green grassy expanses, diverse landscapes and a central overlook toward eastern and western Jerusalem. From the overlook, it is possible to see the Dome of the Rock, which according to tradition covers the Foundation Stone, as well as Al-Aksa Mosque, the Western Wall area, the Dung Gate and the white dome of the ancient Hurva synagogue which was just recently renovated. A short ride from the promenade will bring us to a tunnel dating back two thousand years to the Hasmonean period. The tunnel cuts through the Armon HaNatziv ridge, passes Jabel Mukaber and ends at the Temple, at the mikveh (ritual bath) of the High Priest.
The next stop on our tour is the headquarters of the British high commissioner, which serves today as the UN headquarters in the Middle East. During the Six Day War, the Jordanians conquered Armon HaNatziv, until the soldiers of the Jerusalem Brigade liberated the site.
We will continue toward shaft number three, where the aqueduct mosaic is located. This mosaic provides us with the technological explanation of how the seemingly impossible was achieved – how an aqueduct was built to lead a supply of water from Gush Etzion to the Temple.
At the fifth stop, we will look out over the Herodion, the fortress and tomb of the legendary King Herod.
