From Hollywood to Ancient Jerusalem

British actress, Helen Mirren, winner of the prestigious Oscar, Emmy and Tony awards, visited the City of David, site of ancient Jerusalem, accompanied by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, and his wife, Beverly.

Mirren, best known for her roles in The Queen, along with Woman in Gold, was moved by her visit to the place where Jerusalem’s history began, more than 3,000 years ago. The visit, beginning in the City of David National Park, concluded by the footsteps of the Western Wall, beneath Robinson’s Arch in the Davidson Center.

“It’s just the most extraordinary, moving and powerful experience to be here. To look at the incredible work that’s been done to reveal these histories. I’ve always believed in history,” said Mirren. “I think that we have to remember what happened in the past always as it informs our future and it certainly informs our present. I’m a great believer in that. To be in this situation where you see the past being reveleaed before your eyes is the most extraordinary, passionate and moving experience.”

Mirren was in Jerusalem to award the prestigious Genesis Prize  honoring individuals who have attained excellence and international renown in their chosen professional fields, and who inspire others through their engagement and dedication to the Jewish community and/or the State of Israel. This year’s prize is being awarded to the preeminent violinist, Itzhak Perlman.
