Uncover Buried Treasure: Hanukkah 2016 in Emek Tzurim

When was the last time you discovered an ancient coin or an arrowhead from the Crusader period?
 
Be an archaeologist for a day and participate in a fascinating project that is saving artifacts from the Temple Mount. 
Over the years, participants of the sifting project have uncovered thousands of ancient coins, bullae (seal impressions), tesserae (used in mosaics), arrowheads and thousands of other items from every period in Jerusalem's rich history. 
  • A 15-20 minute crash course on the history of the Temple Mount. 
  • The activity is appropriate for the entire family. 
  • While at the site, one may also play a challenging navigation game that incorporates the history of Jerusalem. This game is currently available in Hebrew only. 

The activity is offered from December 26, 2016- January 1, 2017/ 26 Kislev- 3 Tevet between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm.  

Last activity of the day begins at 2:00pm.
On Fridays, the activity is offered from 8:00am to 1:00pm.  Last activity of the day at 11:00am. 

The Temple Mount Sifting Project

The activity is run by archaeologists and trained educational staff that will help one uncover and identify ancient finds.

Hours of Operation
Sun- Thur: Guided activity in English at 9:00am and 12:00pm
       Guided activity in Hebrew at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm
Friday:       Guided activity in English at 10:00am
       Guided activity in Hebrew at 9:00am and 11:00am
Activity Length: approximately 1.5 hours

Valley Race 

A cellular navigation game for the entire family in the Emek Tzurim National Park. Solve riddles on the topics of Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives and the Temple Mount Sifting Project using a special app developed specifically for this fun and educational game. 
Activity Length: approximately 2 hours. 
Hours of Operation: Sunday- Thursday 8:00am to 4:00pm
          Friday 8:00am to 1:00pm

Mint Half Shekel Coins

During the Temple period, each person gave a half shekel coin towards the upkeep of the Temple. Many of these coins have been found in the area around where the Temple once stood. Create your own copper replica of the half shekel coin using a special minting apparatus. A truly unique souvenir from ancient Jerusalem!

Important Information 
  • We recommend making a reservation in advance through our Reservations Center. Space is limited. 
  • Parking available onsite, at 10 Hadassa Lampel Street, and at the Hebrew University parking lots 
  • You can find us on WAZE at “Zurim Valley National Park”.
  • Public transportation that stops at the Hebrew University: 17, 19, 19א, 30, 30א, 34, 42, 53, 53א, 68, 152. 
The 48 line stops at the Beit Orot Parking Lot. 
The 48א line stops at an observation point overlooking Maaleh Adumim. 
  • There is a snack shop onsite.
  • One must descend numerous steps to reach the site. 
  • Guests are welcome to have a picnic at the National Park.
