The Strength of Concealment

Something monumental happened in the City of David, 3000 years ago on Rosh Hashana. And something monumetal is happening right now...

Something monumental happened in the City of David, 3000 years ago, in the month of Tishrei.  During the time of Solomon, the 1st day of Tishrei -Rosh Hashana - marked the day when the Ark was carried up from the City of David into the Temple.

Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes… in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the City of David, which is Zion.  …in the month of Eitanim, which is [Tishrei], the seventh month.… (I Kings 8:1-2)

The Hebrew word "Eitan" means strong and enduring. Tishrei therefore is referred to in the Bible as the "Month of the Strong Ones".  Yet Rosh Hashana (The Jewish New Year) is also referred to as "the day of concealment": Sound the Shofar to mark the new month, the time of concealment of our Festival Day. (Ps 81:3). Why concealment on a Festival?

Unlike most other Jewish festivals that fall on the full moon, Rosh Hashana falls on the new moon. Just like the diminished moon, the people of Israel humble themselves before the Day of Judgment allowing God to place a cover of concealment over His people's sins, according them forgiveness due to their humbled status. Furthermore, the sound of the shofar sounded during Rosh Hashana confuses the Satan and conceals Israel from his accusatory condemnations.

There is strength and protection in concealment, in humility.  At the City of David, 70 humble pairs of hands dig daily into the dust and dirt of the remains of the ancient city. It is a hardcore job. Heavy buckets of stone and dirt are passed from hand to hand in sometimes extreme heat or the icing cold.

And when something significant emerges, it is dealt with the most tender and delicate care. Brushed off and carefully lifted from its muddy niche, it then gets sent off for additional tests and deciphering.  A hidden city is being searched out by the hands of modest and dedicated hearts.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. (Proverbs 25:2)Kings, they still exist and you will find them in the most unexpected places.

Wishing you a happy, healthy and sweet New Year from the City of David – Ancient Jerusalem, the place where it all began.
