The Execration Texts

The Execration Texts were discovered in Egypt and are comprised of two groups of texts from the 18th and 19th centuries BCE. The texts are written curses in the Egyptian Hieratic script, can be found today in Berlin and Brussels. Both texts contain mentions of Jerusalem  along with other cities in the land of Canaan (Israel) of the same time period. The curses were meant to threaten the rulers of the cities and force them to obey the demands of the Egyptian kingdom. This find points to the level of importance that Jerusalem enjoyed during this time period, which corresponds to the same period as that of the first fortresses discovered in the City of David, near the Gihon Spring.
