In 1986, the Ir David Foundation was formed to secure and develop this unique national site, and continue the long line of illustrious excavations in the area. Today, the City of David is one of the foremost archaeological sites in the world, and sits at the core of the quest to reveal archeological remains from the Biblical Period in Jerusalem (1,000 BCE – 586 BCE).
The Ir David Foundation directs and finances the archeological excavations in the City of David, along with the tourism development of the site. The Foundation partners with a reputable archeological authority (ex. the Israel Antiquities Authority, Hebrew University, and the Shalem Center) which conducts the actual excavations, and assimilates the discoveries for publication. Today the foundation sponsors excavations in three key areas of the City of David:
1) The Spring House Excavation
2) The Shiloach Pool Excavation
3) The Acropolis Excavation (in partnership with the Shalem Center)
